Rest In Peace, Molly Ivins

The woman who coined "Shrub" for our President died an hour ago at the age of 62.

Joe, Joe... Your Time Has Come and Gone

Joe Biden, whose just now finishing his opening comments on the nomination to the Supreme Court of John Roberts, is going to file papers tomorrow for a Presidential bid. I like Joe Biden. Joe Biden's a smart guy. But President Biden? With Obamamania, the Battleship Clinton and upstart Edwards, there's no breathing room. Only Al Gore could shake up the dice. Not Biden.

Let's Mock Tonight!

Mr. Bushie-Wushie's going to the Hill tonight. 6 years, he's gotten thunderous, ass-kissing applause from GOP suck-ups kow-towing to their Great Leader. Now, he's going into a House filled with animosity. Nancy Pelosi will be sitting behind him!

It will be ugly and mocking. Get the popcorn!!

Bringing Art to You, For No Reason At All #4

brassai_notre_dame.jpg

So Tom Hanks went digging under the church and found Elephant man's bones. He put them all together and put Play Dough all over them and was surprised when the creation didn't sing and dance. The chick from Amelie was not so cute and French about the whole thing and wanted better parts.

Ah, Paris.

Checks and Balances Makes A Surprising Return (Eat It, Alberto!)

So now the Bush administration is following FISA? I hope so. I doubt them, though. There's no reason to trust this administration. Why would they cave if they always thought they were right?

D'Crazy

Is it just me or did Colbert seem genuinely angry last night at Dinesh D'souza? Not that I blame him; the book is getting slaughtered in all kinds of reviews and I still don't get D'souza's point. Terrorists don't like our decadant culture, so we should change it? We shouldn't change it, because then the terrorists win?

Having Cake, Eating It, Too

The Right's anger at Barbara Boxer's comments to Condi... I'm confused. I've read numerous things by many right wing peoples (David Brooks comes to mind) that, well, hint at or outright say that women are better serving the world by being "Moms". Conservatives don't like feminism, remember? Trust me, read any Conservo-blog and you'll read "feminism" and "fascists" as synonymous.

So, why then the reverse? Why the sudden claims of solidarity with Steinem and Friedan? Oh, right. It serves their purposes right now! Don't worry, soon they'll be back to saying that birth control demeans women.

(BTW, I think Boxer made a boo-boo, but not a sexist one. I just think it's stupid to say that only people with family members serving in the military are able to judge the impact of the war.)

Bush Babbling

I had a key strategic phone call, so my TV is on mute... but why hear him when there are captions?

"greater economic reform"... has he addressed unemployment?

again with the fucking "of our time". If it is so important, George, then grow a pair and call on US, the AMERICAN PEOPLE to sacrifice something!!

"the Iraqis who have made the choice for freedom"?... are we supporting the Kurds only, then?

instead of casualities, the captions read "cash eu enterprise." telling. very telling.

"functioning democracy" ...are you insane?!?

what an ass-hole. we thought for ten seconds about the Dems phased withdrawal and we want to tell you Americans that if you do what the Dems tell you, they'll be genocide. (don't look behind the curtain, people. you just might see Sudan and genocide happening right now. only there's no oil there, so who the fuck cares?)

George W. Nixon Speaking Tonight On Surge: Must Wrap Television in Bullet Proof Material

(Note to NSA: The title of this post is not a threat to the President. I am not going to harm the president. Just my television set. Metaphorically. I don't own a gun. Thank you.)

Interesting how many GOP senators up for re-election in '08 are plugging in their surge protectors. He'll get a slight bump in the polls. (Some people have no idea that 20,000 is a drop in the bucket, that we've done it before...) But the idea that this is actually change is laughable. Criminally laughable.

Another note on the title: I actually feel I must direct some apologies to the man whose bones are resting in Whittier, California. To say Bush is like Nixon is ultimately a cruel slight against Nixon.

A Woman's Place Is In The House (Holding The Gavel)

04pelosi.337.jpg

I was too young when O'Conner got named to the bench to have any appreciation of our incremental steps forward. But I was happy today. It's a good day for women, for men, for the country... we're living up to our creeds.

Will she be a good Speaker? Well, it's hard to think of a worse Speaker than her predecessor. All the power was with DeLay, not Hastert. He was a strawman, a nothing. There was no big policy objectives, unlike Gingrich. There was no greasing of the wheels, unlike Tip O'Neil.

She has small potatoes policy objectives, but they aren't insignifigant. They are popular measures. (mininmum wage, college loans, energy policy, 9-11 commision recommendations, stem-cell). It'll be easy to do.

The hard stuff comes on Iraq. But I've heard all these idiotic pundits cry and wheeze that Dems don't have a plan. They DO have a plan; it's called phased withdrawal. They can't force the President to do it, though. What they can do is cut off funding, which they won't do until after the surge. If the surge fails (which, let's not kid ourselves, it will. You need 100,000 troops, not 40,000. And we needed them four years ago, not now.), they may have the wiggle room the cancel the check. They're scared of what happened after Vietnam. All together now: THIS IS NOT VIETNAM.

George Bush Discovers The Pen

Sooo... this president has time to write WSJ editorials? Doesn't he have better things to be doing, like finding a mission for his "surge"?

Chevy Chase Kept Us Together

Good grief. Hopefully, this will be the last of Kissinger. What other funerals would he have to speak at? And Brokaw? My least favorite out of the old Big Three?

I have virtually no opinion on Jerry Ford. I don't despise him, I don't love him. He's the Wonder Bread president.
